About this gift
Ruskin Bond's The Blue Umbrella is the classic Indian children's novella about Binya, a girl in the Garhwal hills, and the umbrella the whole village wants. The 90-page Rupa paperback is short enough for a young reader to finish in a weekend and its themes of kindness and owning up to mistakes make it a natural pick from a teacher. The listing gives the age group as 5 to 9 years, and older children read it in school too. One book per child keeps the gift fair and the same for everyone. Suits Children's Day, birthdays and summer reading.
